APC’s inclusion of ‘FREE EDUCATION’ in their agenda and roadmap for Nigeria’s got to be the greatest contradiction of the 21st century. Contrary to what their agenda says, the governors of the states they control are actually jerking up tuition fees in the tertiary institutions. For a group of people who are always quick to ‘clinch’ with the late Baba Awolowo, categorise themselves as his ideological students and tag themselves Awoists, there is no better way for them to desecrate Pa Awolowo’s memory and dance galala on his legacies than they are doing right now. From the astronomical fees being paid in OOU, LASU, and now to Great Ife, APC are saying one thing with their lips and doing something entirely different.
For a party that most Nigerians are tipping to end the ruling party’s winning streak, APC’s recent blunders is what my people will call ‘eedi’, my people will say ‘eedi’ n di won (i don’t know how to translate that o). It’s almost like the ball is in their court, and all the permutations for 2015 points to them as eventual winners, but like they say, “Who the gods will kill, they first make mad.” It is beginning to look like the witch-doctor hired by PDP to dash APC’s hopes is working overtime. The blunders in the education sector may turn out to be what will consume them and end whatever dreams they have of occupying Aso Rock come 2015.
It is left for the student movement to awake, GENUINE student leaders must not rest on their oars, we must continue to resist BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY all attempts to take education beyond the reach of the common man; be it by the ruling party or the opposition.
